Table Rock

“The bus will let you off at Table Rock.” “You can see the Falls from Table Rock.”

What is Table Rock, you ask?

Table Rock is a large shelf of rock that juts out on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, Ontario, just north of the observation area. This came about in the mid-18th century just as the Horseshoe Falls receded. Table Rock is a major vantage point for tourists.

In 1818, the first part of the rock collapsed, followed by minor rock falls in 1828 and 1829. The most notable rock fall occurred in July 1850, when roughly one-third of the point collapsed into the Niagara Gorge. Further rock falls occurred in 1853, 1876 and 1897. For safety purposes (note that the Ontario Powerhouse is directly in the gorge below), the remaining rock was blasted in 1935.

Table Rock is a popular stop for tourists. In the winter months, the mists from Niagara Falls causes the area to be covered by a thin layer of ice, which has been captured by many photographers.
