Fun Things To Do Around Niagara Falls

adminThings to do

Witnessing the Falls firsthand is one of the most popular things to do in Niagara Falls, but there are so many other things to do while you’re in the area. For instance, you can check out the beautiful butterflies and flowers at Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens or get up close and personal with history at Old Fort Niagara.

Best Things to Do Around Niagara Falls

#1. Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens & Butterfly Conservatory

Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens offers a chance to escape the crowds and get lost in nature. The 100-acre space is filled with thousands of plant species spread across beautifully maintained gardens, which are tended to by students attending the on-site horticulture school. Plus, the gardens are home to the Butterfly Conservatory where thousands of butterflies skirt around in a sea of brilliant colors.

If you visit in the summer, you can take a guided horse-and-carriage tour to make the day even more magical.

#2. Old Fort Niagara

You’ll need to travel to the US side of the falls to check out this historic attraction, but it’s well worth busting out your passports. The 17th century fort has belonged to French, British and American troops throughout history. It has also been the site of numerous wars over the years including the American Revolution, as well as the French and Indian War. It is the longest operational fort in all of North America.

The Fort offers spectacular views of Lake Ontario and the Niagara River. A trip inside the fort allows you to check out underground gunpowder rooms, old army barracks, and ancient cannons.

The visitor center provides deeper insight into the site’s history for all of you history buffs. There are usually demonstrations and exhibits open to the public, prompting many people to stay longer than expected.

#3. Niagara Glen Nature Reserve

Back on the Canadian side of the falls, Niagara Glen Nature Reserve offers a stunning location to go for a hike and enjoy the beautiful nature in the area. The nature preserve overlooks the Niagara River and is home to a natural whirlpool. There are over 2 miles of hiking trails that traverse through the preserved Carolinian Forest. This hike is especially spectacular during the fall when the leaves are changing colors.

Visit the nature center located on-site to learn more about the park and all that it has to offer from the knowledgeable staff that works there. At the visitor center you have the opportunity to join guided hikes from May through August.

#4. Inniskillin Winery

Craving some wine? The area may be best known for Niagara Falls, but it is also well-known for its wineries. A drive north along Ontario’s scenic Niagara Parkway to Inniskillin Wines will offer a treat – ice wine! This is wine made from grapes that are frozen on the vine over winter, offering a unique taste.

After temperatures drop to -8 degrees Celsius, grapes are collected and thawed out. The process produces a more intense full-flavored wine.

#5. Niagara Fallsview Casino

Niagara Fallsview Casino is home to 150 table games and several thousand slot machines – this is where the party gets going! Even if you don’t like to gamble, there’s plenty to do here, including a 225,000 square foot shopping mall. Plus, the on-site Avalon Theatre hosts concerts and other entertainment throughout the year.

If you’re looking to relax, there’s a spa ready to book your treatment. Meanwhile, hubby can go check out the golf course. Hungry? There are countless restaurants to choose from as well!
