Heading over to Niagara Falls in the winter? Although you should expect some cold weather, this doesn’t mean that you will have to skip out on seeing the Falls in all their splendor. Even during the winter, there are many fun activities to do and means of experiencing the falls in a unique manner that wouldn’t be possible during the summer.

5 Things to Do in Niagara Falls During Winter

Before you head on over to the Falls, it’s beneficial to plan your time and know what you are doing. This way, you can have an organized itinerary and make the most out of your time. Below, we will cover 5 of our favorite activities to do at Niagara Falls during the winter.

Niagara Falls!

Just because it is winter doesn’t mean that the Falls disappear. Well, actually, there was one documented instance in 1848 when the water flow at Niagara Falls completely stopped. However, the reason for this event was because of a jam of ice in the Niagara River which halted the flow of the stream to the Falls.

Under normal circumstances, Niagara Falls usually never fully stops flowing, not even during the coldest months of winter. Even better –  there might be sheets of ice going from top to bottom on the Falls, offering a uniquely beautiful view to check out.

Winter Festival of Lights

From early November to the end of January you can witness the Niagara Parkway in a manner that is not able to be seen during the warmer months of the year. The Winter Festival of Lights is a splendor in itself, with over 100 different animated light shows being placed on the sides of the road.

While driving or strolling through the area, be sure to check out the Winter Festival of Lights. It is completely free to see. Much of it takes place on the side of the road, whereas other parts can only be seen on foot. In either case, this is a must-see event for you and your family!

Journey Behind the Falls

Journey Behind the Falls is a day-trip that you and the family can take during the winter months while visiting Niagara Falls. Imagine taking a walk behind the falls and seeing the water flow mingling with the ice while going deep into the rock formations behind the falls. If you book a Journey Behind the Falls adventure, this is exactly what you can do!

Check Out the Night Lights

During the winter months, Niagara Falls is illuminated to produce a memorable view that you simply cannot experience during the warmer months. Therefore, if you want to come and witness the glory of Niagara Falls in a unique manner, the winter months are a great time to come visit!

With all aspects of the Falls being completely illuminated at night, this is a site worth seeing. If you have already seen Niagara Falls during the summer, winter offers a completly different way to see the beautiful water formations.
